A strange thing to report...

I am connecting from Europe with an old 56 K modem, my ping is usually 320, lag in a 3-minute-game thus usually amounts to 10, may be 15 secs, which is O.K. for me and most opps. I play with the great and only Thief, timeseal is always on.

Now to the point: When (and only when) my opp premoves many moves in a row, my lag (as shown by thief) skyrockets.

This happens - naturally - oftentimes and almost only in the very end of a game, when both players (or bug teams) try to win on time. Within three or four moves premoved by my opp, my lag then goes up about 10 secs.

Some opps accused me already of cheating because of that. On the other hand, I observed the same thing on some opps' board once I started premoving (which I usually don't do).

Having no other programs open, no downloads running, etc. I guess this must be a technical thing which i cannot influence.

So... Does anyone know:

a) Why this happens?
b) Is it a thief thing or a more general problem?
c) Can it be stopped somehow?

Thx 4 help, DT

Well the lag in bughouse is on FICS not solved and I doubt is here some will to support bughouse as much as could be, I long time did think about it and I think here are peoples on FICS that using some little lagging (what is not problem to make if You are able little programming) in last seconds ... So problem is more general and until logging of full bpgn game including lags will be not supported by FICS alway will be many ways how to little making lags if its useful for win, in the moment lags will be logged its easy to see if its random or made on purpose, well in information is princip that everybody make decision, but if is on FICS group of players that know how to little cheating in bughouse, they making group that have no will to solve it ...
Its reason why I made first version of DCB:Netgame - to show that its possible to realize it ...

Dear Skacz,
thx for not answering ANY of my questions...

My intention was NOT to start a discussion about lag on FICS in general!

Still hoping for serious answers - DT

Well I only made re to question about cheating, I know on FICS many players which if will say me: I dont cheating, I belive it, because I know personally for example and because technology is only tool, but also maybe exists some to which i will not belive. Maybe is better to only ask for 1 problem, if you will describe the all problems like the behaviour of others, then anybody can join to discussion about second problem :-)

Hello DonToemmel
What happened to you is the same, which happened to LinusO, who stopped bugging on FICS for some time, because he was tired of premove lag of around 2-3secs per premove. He didn't mention anything about that kind of lag in the finish positions, and I think it especially happened to him with his own moves.
Personally it happens to me too in rare cases. I just stop premoves in such situations and stop playing after that game, as it doesn't make sense, to play with such lag.
I do not have an explanation and I do not even know, whether it is a Thief problem or a FICS problem.
In case your opponents lag that way, DonToemmel, you should maybe have a look at your opp's vars, whether it is a Thief or a Babaschess user.

Thx, beuki - this is already of SOME help. But as mentioned: The weird thing and problem is that MY lag gets worse when MY OPP premoves! I rarely ever premove.

Hi folks
We just had a discussion about this premove lag in chan 0. SuperIntellect thinks that this lag comes from the minmovetime command. So in case all bugger in a match with minmovetime 0 there should not be that kind of problem.

Interesting advice, beuki! - I changed MY minmovetime to zero. But it may be hard to convince ALL buggers (or even all the four in a match) to do so... And I still don't know if that "set minmovetime 0" gives me any other disadvantage, as there is NO "help_minmovetime" at FICS, sigh.

524 (Thu, Nov 8) More new variables: minmovetime, showownseek, nowrap

The Premove variable has been renamed to minmovetime. If either or both
\ players in a game have this variable turned on, a move can take no less
\ than 1/10 of a second. Setting your showownseek variable on will display
\ your own seek ads in the sought list regardless of your formula. Finally
\ the nowrap variable will prevent output from FICS from being wrapped
\ according to your width variable. Bot writers may find this useful.

OK, I did :
set minmovetime 0
You will not request minimum move time when games start.

Well, just a SuperIntellect *thought*. Has it been already proven that minmovetime setting has any effect on due-to-premove lag?

Well Wir, there are dozens of players who think FICS policy is try and error. They would never expect any scientific proofs!!

Hurra!
I didn't have that problem anymore since switching to a fast dsl connection...
I KNOW that this does NOT solve the problem for other people (especially in countries without dsl capacity).
